Music Earth Rise in Zambia

From one musician's desire to use his music and creativity to create a chance for change; in 2010, a trip to Zambia to look at projects run by The Butterfly Tree and experience Zambian culture inspired the project to build a music centre in Mukuni Village.

Whilst holding some music workshops in rural villages; songwriter, Brendan Mission was humbled by the talent and enthusiasm of the children. He donated his guitar to the school and started a small children’s music group and vowed to return.

Due to the high poverty levels there is very little for these young people to do outside the classroom. Providing these facilities will give the children an opportunity to develop music skills. In addition to being used as a teaching establishment, it will also be used to hold concerts and drama productions to assist the HIV/AIDS prevention and the fight against this devastating virus. It is also a chance to become self-sustaining.

March 26th 2013

MER Music Centre

It’s been a while, but sometimes things just take a little more time than you expect ! So here it is after 2 and a half years of first stepping foot in Zambia; the Zambian music centre is finally built!

A reminder all of where it all began:

It all started with a philanthropic trip to look at projects run by The Butterfly Tree charity and to hold music workshops for the children of Mukuni village. After the success of the workshops I donated my guitar to the school and along my travelling partner, Valerie, we came up with the idea to build a music centre for the children of Mukuni Village (more…)

Live! the parent organization of Dewa Drummers is fully committed to the inclusion of disabled young people in mainstream activities and into the life of the local and wider community. Foundations for the Mukuni village music centre, Zambia

August 8th 2012

On Thursday 30th September 2010, myself and trusty side kick Nick set off from Turnham Green, London on a pair old rusty bikes to play an open mic night @ The Thatch pub, in Croyde, North Devon on the 3rd October. This was to launch the start of a project to build a music centre in Mukuni village, Zambia. In March 2011, Music Earth Rise was then launched to raise the rest of the funds via live music events (See event history here). This idea and vision is now becoming a reality!

We are pleased to say that the foundations for the building have now been laid and the structure is well underway. Hurray !! After all the hard work from everyone who has been involved it’s great to see the results emerging. The music centre is 16 metres long and 8.4 wide and will include an office, store room for instruments, a stage and main hall. We will have some more pictures for you very very soon so please keep dropping by for the updates.

MUSIC EARTH RISE presents Music for Mukuni, Zambia

September 26th 2011

With special guest LTJ BUKEM

Viewed as an innovator in the drum and bass style, Bukem is known for developing an accessible alternative to that hardcore genre’s speedy, assaultive energies. His style pays homage to the Detroit based sound of early techno, but Bukem also incorporates still earlier influences, particularly the mellow, melodic sonorities of 1970s era jazz fusion as exemplified by Lonnie Liston Smith and Roy Ayers. Head of the Good Looking Organisation of labels and artists LTJ Bukem is (more…)
